And The Journey started with a Leap of Faith | #triochallenge Week 1 explained

Randomness and risk is everywhere and the 50–50 likelihood of either succeeding or failing in achieving any target, is what we are all aware of, in one way or another. But does that stop us from moving ahead? Certainly Not! and if it is, then move ahead with a leap of faith like in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ , Miles did :

Miles: When do I know I am Spider-Man?

Peter: You won’t. That’s all it is, Miles… a leap of faith!

Our journey also had a simple and small beginning with lots of things unclear and a sky of uncertainty. But we took a leap of faith and just started!

We gathered over a call and started thinking about what we should learn in our week 1 and we decided that Week 1 #triochallenge task would be:

To prepare a dataviz using only ‘show me’ charts or very simple easy-to-understand charts in Tableau and create a good data story out of it and highlight story points clearly.

We decided to use same dataset for this challenge which was #MakeOverMonday Week 47 2019. Please check the dataset here.

Below are our submissions for this task and our learnings:

Joti

  1. I have used bar in bar chart
  2. Design : Tried using Figma Software to create Glassomorphism look with a little bit of 3D. (first try)
  3. Colors are taken as from the most popular colours of that year (I don’t know why I did this )

Vani

  1. I have used rounded bar charts with inverse axis to make it look diverging.
  2. Tried to make it as clean as possible because I tend to overdo it most of the time.

Kavya

  1. I have used a simple bar chart.
  2. I tried using Figma software to create a smartphone effect. While I was learning Tableau I encountered an accidental dataviz also.

This first step of publishing the challenge workbooks and sharing them over Linkedin and Twitter boosted our confidence. We experimented with design and kept the analytics simple and easy to understand. Apart from this, We enjoyed the first week a lot and had a lot of conversations which made us very comfortable with each other in sharing thoughts.

I would encourage all the beginners out there who are still thinking of sharing their first dataviz with community or are still confused if they should start taking part in community projects, ‘Take a leap of faith and just start your journey’

See you all soon in next blog!
